There are loads of protein shakes and weight gainers out there on the market and a lot of the ones you see a lot in the shops here in the UK don't have much information surrounding them online. One such victim is Sci-MX Lean Grow MRF which I keep seeing at my current gym 'Fitspace'. So I had a go and the result is this Sci-MX Lean Grow MRG review.
Price Point
I get a 20% discount on all supplements at Fitspace so this was a more appealing buy for me. However for you guys this is a fairly expensive protein shake at 41.99 for less-than-average 2kg. Still in theory you get what you pay for so let's have a look at the ingredients and stats.
The Stats
Right I've done that. They're quite good actually - as you get 44g of protein per serving which is a little more than your average bear. Meanwhile the protein claims to be 'slow release' (sort of like the complex carbs of the protein world I guess?) and if that's possible then it sounds kind of nice. Though now I think about it wouldn't that mean you couldn't take advantage of the post-workout anabolic window? Hmm...
However it's also high in your BCAAs and glutamine. For those who have lives and don't spend their lives reading about bodybuilding online (that's not me!) BCAAs are 'branched chain amino acids' and 'glutamine' is an amino acid that plays a big role in building muscle. So in other words this isn't just any old protein this is the good stuff. It also has aminogen which it claims helps to increase BCAA retention by 250% - I guess that just means it's very bioavailable but don't expect any miracles. Nicely the information on the back says this 'could increase effectiveness of protein.
I have now turned the bad boy around and I'm looking at the other stats. You also get a lot of minerals and vitamins in here - nice if you don't already take a vitamin supplement but it kind of annoys me when they throw other stuff in. Anyway this also gives you energy and stronger contractions as a result of the minerals and vitamins and has antioxidant effects but if you're taking a vitamin tablet that means you're getting an extra 133% of your RDA... so a potential vitamin overdose. People like to stack so it annoys me when shakes try to fill every role. Too clever for it's own good...
The title is 'Lean Grow' - it's not a protein shake per say - so one thing you do want to be careful of is the high carbohydrates content which is at 45g (only 4g sugar though). Eep - that's higher than the protein. If you're bulking then that's great and it means more energy, but if you're cutting or want to build lean muscle it ain't so good.
My Experiences
The proof is in the pudding though - and you don't need a Sci-MX Lean Grow review to list the ingredients. I took this bad boy for 2 months and what did I find?
Yep I gained muscle so that's a plus for it (I was previously on body fortress which is cheap stuff). However I didn't gain as much muscle as EAS so it's not the best bulker in the world (I love EAS) and it wasn't especially lean gains.
So in conclusion - Sci-MX Lean Grow is a good bulking supplement and my second favourite one after EAS. It's not great in terms of price and a little high in carbs for a lot of people, but if you want to build muscle it'll do the trick.
Oh and it tastes great actually! It only goes with water which is great for a change as the temptation isn't there to load up with more fatty milk, and the strawberry cream flavour is much better than vanilla.
3/5 stars.
