How to Avoid Internet Bodybuilding Scams

By Adam Sinicki

Hey YOU! Want to STOP GETTING SCAMMED by idiots getting commission online?? Read on

Bodybuilding, unfortunately, is a hobby that's rife with scams and people trying to make a quick buck off of the hopeful expectations of its practitioners. Sadly in many cases they're successful and it's not unusual to find naïve young weight lifters sending their cash off to online 'gurus' promising them quick results in under a minute…
The first thing to realise is that unfortunately there's no such thing as a silver bullet. However good a supplement claims to be, you're still going to have to put in a lot of work to get into good shape. The other thing to remember is that when starting out you don't need to spend money on any supplements. If you're new to bodybuilding or not having any success yet, then the only supplement you should be considering is a protein shake - and even without a protein shake you can make impressive gains. If you're currently experiencing a lack of enthusiasm for your workouts then no supplement is going to make that okay, and if you're currently not seeing any results it means you're not training correctly and no supplement will fix that.
Still you may decide that you want to get a supplement anyway to help you along the way - and something like creatine or NO2 certainly won't hurt. So you search online for the answers and you look at adverts. If you search in Google however, or look at the ads that pop up on almost ever single bodybuilding website, then the first thing you're likely to find is a scam. So how do you spot a scam?
Well a scam looks something like this:

Hey YOU! Do you want to be a REAL MAN like me?? Are you fed up of working your BUTT off in the gym with no results? Then listen to my story of how I gained 4 stone of muscle in just 3 WEEKS using a great new training product: 'super powerful ultimate supplement'.
I know, I didn't believe it either. But then I was a WEAKLING like YOU! The thing is, no one wants you to know about super powerful ultimate supplement because its results are so TERRIFYINGLY EFFECTIVE that the supplement industry would be out of business… So stop taking nasty protein shakes that don't do anything and try a really effective supplement. Read on and find out how it works and how you can get your first order for FREE.
Using cutting edge scientific techniques, super powerful ultimate supplement can actually change the vibro- briations of your musculature, helping you build muscle while you sleep.

And it goes on… and on. Obviously that's just a made up example and the real scammers are much cleverer, but unfortunately for them they all use the same methods. Here are a few things to look out for: bold, underlining, italics… all of these are over-zealous marketing ploys that target the naïve and the vulnerable and should be instant warning signs; anything that sounds too good to be true - because that means it probably is; anything that bad-mouths other supplements - it's just not professional; and long strips of text. These sites usually also have a fake comments section down the bottom, you'll know it's fake because they'll all be positive and there won't be a way for you to post any comments yourself. Even if there's a text box it probably won't work - try posting to make sure.
You might be questioning though how these sites work - particularly when they promise to give things away for free. Well simply they're commission based and it's called 'affiliate marketing'. Basically some small supplements company offers individuals the opportunity to sell their products to any one they can and they then get a percentage or a payoff. Even when the product is free it means the company has got your details and will probably ask for your debit card details too - and that you don't want. Even if the products work they won't work as well as the cheesy before and after shots (that they probably Googled) will promise so move on and buy them from a proper vendor.
Basically be very sceptical when shopping online for supplements and make sure you read reviews and in forums and learn the science of what you're buying first. Don't be tempted by lofty promises and stick to the tried and tested formulas. Remember if there really was a miracle drug - we'd all be taking it.
