Why I Want to be a Superhero
By Adam Sinicki
When I was 15 my diary used to begin with entries like this 'Hi, I'm Adam, and I have super powers'. Yes I'm well aware that the age of 15 is far too old to be doing this, but I was a slow developer and quite thankfully a loser. I of course don't really have super powers (not even 'super balance' as I used to claim), but rather I just always really wanted them. Here I share with you why that is, and why I still strive after more power and abilities through the training on this site.
All the Usual Stuff
You could argue that everyone wants super powers, and if you say you don't then you're probably lying. Of course no one really wants to be the Thing or an Inhuman, but something like Superman's powers, Spider-Man's or the Human Torch would do just nicely. People want these powers so that they can feel special, so that they can be hailed as a hero and get the girl, and so that they can be part of something bigger and more important than their mundane day-to-day lives. That's not why I want to be a superhero though...
The Will to Power
The reasons that I want to be a super hero revolve more around the super powers that come with it - and the freedom this would give you. If I could have any superpower in the world I'd go with teleportation so that I could be anywhere in the world at any given time. Imagine being able to just teleport from here right now to an amazing tropical landscape and stand and look out over the jungle. In the mornings I wouldn't shower - I'd teleport under an amazing waterfall, then straight to the desert to cool off. You could then go exploring anywhere and if you got into trouble... just disappear.
I was annoyed at the Colosseum in Rome for this reason. I had a great time of course and it was very romantic with lovely Hannahski, but at the same time I felt like I should be able to climb it and like I should be able to return whenever I liked. If I could teleport then I could do that and no one could stop me. I could do this sort of thing wherever I went and time, money and the law wouldn't be a restriction. Likewise I could teleport to visit my friends in moments.
Other powers would do. Like Superman's - he can fly super fast and he's invincible and actually that latter point makes him a lot more free too because he can do and say what he likes and not worry about retribution. In one issue (Superman for Tomorrow) he just appears in Afghanistan and takes away all the weapons. Imagine being able to meet a mugger in the street and not be intimidated, not even beat him up, but instead give him a wedgie and then urinate on him. Because he could literally do nothing about it. Now that would be cool... You could just walk into places and be like 'what??'.
The Reality
Sadly the reality is quite the opposite of this. You can't go anywhere you like and you do have to face retribution. And for most people freedom is massively an illusion and instead of visiting amazing landscapes and giving muggers wedgies you instead end up spending all day in an office that's around 10 by 10 square metres, apologising to your boss and then coming home and feeling the pressures of every day life - money family and all the rest.
Through the training and advice on this site I have managed to become a little closer to the dream and I have managed to become more free. I also hope that the advice has helped you guys to find a bit more power in your own life. Thanks to the bodybuilding and martial arts I've done I can walk through a bad area and not really worry, and I can put most people back in their place when they step out of line. At the same time through the brain training and productivity I've learned I've managed to work for myself - this year I'm going on 3 and maybe 4 holidays and I'm writing this as I travel. Tomorrow I will be trekking across a desert (albeit a mini desert in the Canaries). And thanks to my climbing and parkour I can jump from roof top to roof top with my little sachel and skip the hustle and the bustle of the streets.
So I don't have super powers (yet), but I have got some of the advantages and some of the freedom I want. I've got big plans though, and in 10 years I hope to really break free.
