Black OPS Gloves ReviewBy Adam SinickiAfter buying my Vibram Five Finger shoes and being thoroughly enthralled with them I got back into climbing and parkour in a rather big way. And what do I do when I have an obsessive hobby? I spend lots of money! What I decided in this case was that as rubber had proved so successful for my feat, I should also get some from my hands. Some that would make me grip better and that would provide a protective layer between my hands and the sharp rocks etc. Typing 'climbing gloves' into eBay though came up surprisingly short and all I could really find was fingerless gloves. The only thing I did find was the 'Black O.P.S. Gloves' which stands for 'Omni Purpose Sport'. The picture showed a man rock climbing, and then threading a needle through some cloth... which looked like just what I wanted. And actually the nice surprise is that by and large these are just what I wanted. They feel like rubber gloves – like you would wash plates with (except they are cool black and look more like you're going to kill someone) – and they are a similar material though a bit tougher of course and thicker. They also come with some chalk on them which aids grip, though the rubber is pretty sticky already. ![]() I took them for a little test run of course and started by using them along with my five finger vibrams to climb some trees with a lot of thick bark on them, and to climb some fences. I also leapt right up and caught a nice archway for me to shimmy along. Now while I could probably do these things before I never felt confident enough too because it might be slippery, or might be sharp, or might hurt when it came off in my hand. With the Black O.P.S. though I have just enough tactile feedback while at the same time feeling protective and 'sticky'. Oh and you can still use your touchscreen phone! How good is that? In short by combining the two items I feel like Spider-Man. Which rocks big time. My gripes? Well the material is flimsy so really you're paying a lot for what you get – these are essentially just rubber gloves and they won't keep your hands warm or be suitable for biking and the like. And that also means I'm expecting them to break relatively fast. They haven't yet, so that's maybe unfair, but trust me they will. They're also so tight and impossibly difficult to get on and off that you can't really just 'launch into action' (I'm kind of obsessed with my ability to launch) and they're horribly sweaty and quite aggressive looking. So cool for performance enhancing with perhaps a slight downside when it comes to practicality. Definitely the best out there and hopefully someone will bring some more similar things out soon!
