You get hundreds of health benefits as a bodybuilder and hundreds of lifestyle benefits and I have written about all of these many times before. However there are also some downsides and one of the things you hear most often is that bodybuilders lose agility and flexibility, that they end up slow and lumbersome. This is a problem for many people and is why they aim not to become 'too big'.
Technically though this is called you 'range of movement' and while you might start having to rub up against lampposts to scratch your back (a-la Baloo from Jungle Book), there are some ways you can retain a greater range of movement while still being a bodybuilder. Here we will have a look at some of those methods.
Stretch: You should stretch both before and after a workout in order to increase the range of movement for your ligaments and for your actual muscles themselves. Stretch gently rather than 'bouncing' into the movement to avoid possible injury, and gradually increase the distance.
Go Through the Full Range of Motion: Part of the reason that some people struggle with manoeuvrability following a lot of exercise is that they train through only half of the motions. In other words they train - unknowingly - with partial reps. In other words not going all the way down to the bottom and that then means that their muscle ends up kind of lop sided. This in turn means that they have a lop sided muscle that pulls more in one direction and that means less movement. Whether you're doing bicep curls or bench press, continue the move all the way to the bottom.
Increase Range of Movement During Exercises: The other way to achieve a greater range of movement to an even greater extent is to go beyond this. In other words then squat ass-to-grass not just half way, and likewise make sure you go all the way down to the ground during press ups. In many exercises you can increase your range of movement by putting yourself up on a box somehow. For instance in press ups put each hand on a box (or a press up stand) and then you can go lower than flat so your chest is beneath your hands.
Stay Even: Finally some cretins will train their muscles evenly. For instance they will build massive pecs without working their traps which would counterbalance the forward pull. That then in turn means that they end up all hunched over. For your posture and for your flexibility make sure that your work any two sets of opposing muscles equally.
