I'm currently doing my finals (yes that's right sympathy please) and in one week's time I'll have 6 exams over the course of 5 days on such thrilling subjects as Neuroscience and Clinical Psychology. Being editor of The Biomatrix.Net I tought this would be an awesome time to try out some nootropic drugs/cognitive enhancers. So I popped into my now-regular supplements store 'Naked Nutrition' (I'm not aloud caffeine tablets anymore...) to speak to the lady who we can't decide is hot or not. I passed one of the most powerful men on Earth who terrified me by making eye contact then addressed our friend. I was actually also looking for massage oils so I asked for these first. 'For the... genital... region eh??' she said in a sickening and sleazey way. 'Ummm... no just, just normal massage oils thanks...' I stuttered. This was my first clue to the fact that she is actually bonkers. Anyway, she supplied me with some (so glad I didn't have to go into Anne Summers) and I asked for nootropics that might also aid me in the gym. Like a whirlwind with scary certainty she placed a bottle on the desk and prepared to scan them both through. I asked if possibly I could see the price of said product to which she sheepishly replied that it was 30 quid! Ah. So I asked for something a bit cheaper, and with no hesitation (and not really any say in the matter) 'Cognis Essence' by 'Australian Bush Flower Essences' is what I got.
I liked the sounds of 'Cognis Essence' and I liked the price (6 quid with their 40% discount) so upon getting home I gave it a go - 7 drops under the tongue as recommended. Then started to try some work. The effects were... noticeable, if hard to pin down. I'd say I was a bit stairier and perhaps my thoughts were a bit slowed down... though it was possible this could be a placeabo effect again.
So I headed online to look into it (this is the order I do things - swallow first, ask questions later). No reviews (I've fixed that). So I headed over to the manufacturers site... and got a scare.
Turns out there's a whole bunch of products there, from those helping women with their periods (alleiviating 'an ancient curse on women's blood'... :-S), to ones that can make you more confident, or more romantic. So basically, it's hippy stuff. Fuck. And the main way it works is by grinding up leaves from Australian plants so that you might adopt the characteristics of that plant - green and motionless??? Here's how the company started...

'Ian grew up in the Australian bush. As a young boy his grandmother, like her mother before her, specialised in using Australian plants and would often take him bush walking. From her deep understanding she would point out the many healing plants and flowers. He learned a profound respect for nature through her and went on to become a practitioner and a pioneer working with and researching the rare remedial qualities of Australian native plants.'
Not one to completely write something off without ample evidence however I decided to check up the ingredients individually: Bush Fuchsia and Isopogon (two of the Australian bushes, with no real medicinal value), Jacaranda (which is a tree, and an old legend says if one of its flowers fall on you you'll pass all your exams... no doubt why it's in there), Paw Paw (apparently may have future medicinal use) and Sundew (which apparently is a weak stimulant).
