Having recently returned to Guildford after a year-long exile to Leeds I decided that I needed a new supplier for my protein shakes. It was this insight that lead to my discovery of 'Naked Nutrition' - home of some very decent discounts and a very helpful possibly fit/possibly not checkout assistant (depends on who you talk to). It was this that in turn lead to my discovery of Cytosport's Muscle Milk (she pushed it on us so hard I'm unsure if they ever manage to sell any of their other products) - a rather unusual protein shake that claims to mimick the ingredients in human breast milk in order to provide the same kinds of benefits for growth and tissue repair. This protein blend is known as EvoPro (tm) and that's not the only trademark on the tub (which normally sets off the alarm bells).
Muscle Milk also contains 'Lean Lipids (tm)' which apparently uses special fats that can transport other fats to your muscles, thus speading up the catabolism of those fats. Sceptical? I was at first too, especially as she kept making wooshing noises and strange analogies to explain the process, and I'm not entirely convinced about 'magic fats' now either, but I must say that regardless of the hype I was more than happy with the effectiveness of the product.
The first thing you notice is the taste. I absolutely loved my EAS last year, but Muscle Milk beats even that and has a far larger selection including chocolate, cookies and cream, bana, vanilla cream, strawberry, cinamon bun, brownie batter, chocolate malt, creme brulee, horchatta (wtf???), dulce de leche (again... wtf???) and more - something that apparently came from a collaboration with Ben and Jerry's and certainly makes a nice change from the usually lame three flavours. I found it a bit concerning however as I thought anything that had 'tiny bits of cookie in it' would be unlikely to be great for lean muscle mass, magic fats or no (I was also slightly concerned about choking); I can't actually comment on that as I chickened out anyway and went for Chocolate and later Vanilla and Stawberry, but all of those mixed brilliantly and tasted great. And the lean muscle mass certainly came as within just three weeks I'd put on half a stone and still looked just as cut as before (and that's pretty damn cut too). That was while taking less than the recommended dosage too at just one and a half scoops twice a day.
My friend Nathan also found it beneficial - and he didn't actually put on weight but managed to redistribute it from his stomach to his arms which was pretty much his training goal so it's a shake that can be used for different benefits. Additionally it gives you hardly any bloat and mixes fairly well so it's hard to see a downside really.
It also apparently has other energy and recovery benefits too and there's all sorts of pseudo science on the back. How effective any of this is is a mystery - although I did cut my creatine (at the enthusiastic assistant's insistance) and found no noticeable decline in energy. It certainly can't hurt to have that stuff in there (right??). Comparing it to my other favourite shake - EAS 100% Whey - it wins on taste and lean muscle mass, but as a pure weight gainer EAS is still the superior product and cheaper too. That's why for beginners and weeds I still recommend EAS but for anyone who wants something a bit more advanced Muscle Milk is my new top choice. Thank you over eager shop attendant!
