Postby Adman » 06 Mar 2010, 15:12

Hey guys, so I get lots of e-mails from people asking how to get bigger arms etc etc... So I was just thinking we could do it here instead and everyone wins that way?? Any questions at all: fire away!

Hey adam!
Nice job with the forum man.

Well, my problem is:
My abs muscles are assymetrical, even if i train them equally. Here's my training regime (only the parts that work the abs though)
10x3 sit ups
10x3 leg raises(lying on the floor)
30 segs of static hold, 3 series.

I normally also used to do 30 mins of treadmill, but recently it's broken, so i skip it

So you see, i have no training that only works one side of the abs, but still my right side is more defined than my left side

Any advice?

Hi Rian,

Great I'm glad you like it! Thanks for joining :D

That's a tricky one actually! The thing is that your abs are actually one sheet of muscle just divided into six segments, rather than being six separate mucles. As such it's hard to train one side specifically. We all have very different abs genetically though (if you look at bodybuilders then some have really even six packs while others' are all out of line) so it might be that your abs actually just look stronger on the one side.

One thing I would recommend though is perhaps adding some work for your obliques and serratus muscles. These are the muscles that go on either side of your abs (obliques) and up higher by your ribs (serratus). To work these you add a twist to your normal sit up and this way you'll be defining the area surrounding your abs to make them more even in appearance (it's also just good for your core in general). It might also engage the sides of your abs specifically.

One great exercise for the obliques is to lie on the ground with your legs together and your knees facing to the left or the right against the floor so you're twisted. If you do a sit up from there going straight up as normal you'll be working just one side of your core. Try doing a few extra of these on your weaker side and see if it has any affect.

I hope that's helped a bit! Let me know any other Qs and I'll be happy to answer on here! Thanks again for signing up!

Yo Adam,

I spent three months at the end of last year using protein shake, but recently decided I couldn't afford to keep it going, its been about two months and I'm doing the exact same workouts that I did on the protein shake and so far havent noticed a decrease in muscle mass, how much of an effect does the protein shake have? am i suddenly going to lose a lot of muscle mass?

thanks

Howdy Gnat, thanks for signing up! This is my old gym buddy everybody!

Well the reason that you likely haven't lost much mass is that maintenance is much easier than putting on muscle. In other words you possibly will be able to maintain your muscle mass but you'll have a harder time putting more on which may mean that you're not getting the best results from your workouts - which you deserve to as you tend to beast your workouts.

So what I'd recommend unless you're happy at your current shape is to just eat more protein such as eggs. You don't have to have them raw, some people say that doesn't work anyway, but just eat a couple a day. This is possibly a leaner source than most shakes anyway. Eat more tuna too. LOTS more tuna.

Alternatively you could just find a cheaper protein shake. Here's one source: http://www.discount-supplements.co.uk/ Another is a site Janik's raving about, they're even cheaper and focussed on being the 'just the basics' of protein. I'll post here when I've next spoken to him (or you could Facebook him). Alternatively go to Asda and get some Whey Supreme or a health store and get some Body Fortress - they're shitty but better than nothign.

To answer the question of how well they work, they certainly do make quite a drastic difference. My friends on protein shake are all much more massive than those who aren't and the biggest I ever was one in Leeds when I was taking two lots of the EAS 100% Whey. I got massive then and I probably trained harder since! So yeah they do work, but they are expensive, so you've just got to find a way around it! If you're happy at you're current weight and you're not losing any mass however then I guess don't worry about it. Although they are also delicious.

See, how helpful was that?? Tell your friends! And post more!

Btw are you getting an e-mail when I reply to your thread? I want that to be automatic!

Adam! As usual you dont disappoint! you do need to get your ass back to Guildford, because my current gym buddies aren't a patch on you good sir! But no, I didn't get an email...

Thanks for the advice, tbh I am happy with the size I have reached so am happy with just maintenance for now, and am going into the RAF soon, so dont want to be a beefcake!!!!

Okay what type of workout would you recommend for somebody that wants to get more in shape (Increase Stamina, and build muscle) then they already are...but has no equipment or money to buy any, and no gym that they come go to.

Hey Soul!

Well I was personally in the same boat as you when I first started out, and I think that's actually helped me rather than hindered me in the long run as it's kept my body to weight ratio good and it's meant that I can train anywhere. The best kind of training for someone with no equipment I find it bodyweight training. This means press ups, sit ups, one legged squats, tricep dips and that kind of thing. If you haven't seen my YouTube videos then head over to the main site and click 'Biomatrix TV' up the top - then watch some of these workouts for some bodyweight training moves.

The only problem with bodyweight training is that you can't really do your arms with the stuff around most homes. Instead then if you can invest in *one* piece of equipment make it a pull up bar. They're only about £5 ($10) and will fit into a door frame in any home. With these you can train biceps, lats and abs excellently (again see the YouTube video). If not you could try to find a branch somewhere or a door frame and use that.

If you can't find anywhere to pull up though then another good technique is 'dynamic self resistance' - which means holding your own arm down with the other arm and curling against that. This is actually just as effective as curling a weight, and you can alternatively get a friend to pull your arm down instead.

Finally check out the article on the main site 'Train ANYWHERE'. You can get to it by clicking on 'Archive' up the top and then 'Bodybuilding > Train ANYWHERE', or by searching for it on the search box on the right of every page.

Let me know how you get on with that! I might make this post into an article on the site too as it seems to be a problem that quite a few people have. Good luck!

hi ad!

say, do you think its a good idea to change my weekly training from 4 days a week to every day? I been doing the same for 2 or 3 weeks and I feel great during the days that I work out so 8-) ...is it ok for a beginner?
