Running addiction

Postby Konan » 01 Oct 2010, 07:53

Hi
Found this site on youtube
Love the exercise vids, thx so much!

Little bit about me:

I'm 24y old and since I was 16y old I started training at the gym, after 2 years I had ''for my eyes'' the perfect body shape..
But then I started running, and found myself enjoying it, after few months running I had this uncontrollable high energy that made me keep running without knowing when to stop.. It didn't matter what weather it was hot, rainy or snowy.
I started loosing weight and muscles, no matter how much I changed my diet, tried eating more proteins, fat and vitamines
nothing worked i kept loosing weight, I reduced my running to 10km still kept loosing weight and muscles

After that I was getting too skinny so had to stop doing what I loved the most and got pretty much depressed 'bout it at that time, my weight eventually got back to normal quited powertraining aswell and started smoking (pretty much doing everything what a runner shouldn't do)

Anywayz, 6years of smoking and not training has passed, and suddenly a week ago I decided to quit smoking, 3 days ago started running again, and I couldn't believe it but I managed to run 10km in 1h10min my record 6years ago was 49min and it started also around 1h 10min, I don't feel any pain or whatever while i'm running did feel it when I was home, I can barely move now without hurting myself :D and god my back is killing me!!
So I'm afraid I'm going to pick up the bad habbit again and faster then I realize :s

My question is how will I keep or even gain weight if I keep running?
Is there any diet I don't know about?
And am I stupid not to notice when my body had enough??
I do remember my gymteacher used to say while running you'll have to fight your negative mind not to stop running
Guesse I showed my negative side who's the boss :D

Anywayz sorry for making you read all this :)
Hope to get some response
grtz

Hey Konan! Welcome to the site, I hope you stick around :-D And congrats for being the first to post in the Athletics section!

Wow that's a unique problem you've got there! Most people are worried that they can't stick at something, but your problem is you can't stop? I'd certainly say that running is a better addiction than smoking though! (sounds like you've got quite the addictive personality :-P Don't worry you're in good company!). Thing is that running releases endorphins and growth hormone - and both of these can be somewhat chemically addictive. These are released from bodybuilding too but not in the same quantities. Likewise running has that addictive feeling of trying to beat your old time etc. Sounds like you're a natural so go with it!

If you're losing more weight than you want to though that's a tricky one. But the solution isn't protein - it's carbs. Running burns energy and that energy comes from the carbs you've eaten during the day before moving on to the fat and then eventually muscle. So in other words if you give yourself enough carbs then it will never need to start burning your muscle for energy. I barely ever recommend weight gain products, but in your case it sounds like they might be useful. On top of that eat other slow-release (complex) carbs like bread, pasta and rice, and it's all about getting the right balance between the energy you burn and the energy you consume. If you have a calorie counter for running with then try taking that number and eating that many carbs on your running days to counteract the effects.

That said eat protein too and do still keep going to the gym (not on the same days) to build muscle again. You should find that the running actually helps you to perform better in the gym as it improves your energy, endurance, fast twitch muscle fibres and your chemical makeup. You're now in a position to have both great endurance and be in great shape. Another option is always to try and move onto a different cardiovascular activity that builds muscle too - for example have you considered swimming or rowing?

My last piece of advice is that if it's the 'high' you love, then try interval training. I could have sworn I wrote an article on it for this site but it seems I didn't so I'll get on it! Essentially though interval training means sprinting, walking and jogging in one cardiovascular session. Try setting up 100 metres (or estimate roughly 100 metres between two lampposts) and then try sprinting to the end - then walk back, and sprint to the end again and repeat ten times. This will get you tired quickly, build muscle, and massively trigger a chemical reaction in your body. It's hard core though! (and you look a bit mental doing it!).

Hope that helps some! Good luck, and feel free to ask any more questions!

Hey Adman! Thx, Glad to be here :D I thought it was pretty cool to be the first just didn't wanna brag about it

sounds like you've got quite the addictive personality :-P Don't worry you're in good company!

No I don't.. Ok I totally do :) But I can't help it..
I have to admit, my smoking habbit isn't completly gone yet, but much to my suprise It did reduce alot!
I used to smoke 1pack a day sometimes the day wasn't even over and got me started on 2nd pack..
Now I smoked 1 pack in 4day's to me that's a big difference, before it felt like I needed sigarets to breathe ..

Looked up endorphins..
It is like you said, I'm pretty happy now that the cause is chemically addictive and not that the problem is between my ears..

I also understood that when endorphins are released it makes you feel good/happy and now I understand why I've been in such a good mood lately, it's been a very long time I've felt this way.. ofcourse I've been once in a while in a good mood, but this is differend when I go to sleep and wake up next day I'm still in a good mood!

Thx for the info about the carbs very helpfull!
I don't have the calorie counter, but now i'm planning to buy it later on today :D always wanted one anyways..

about the gym, how many times do you suggest I should go in a week? At the moment I planned to run 5times a week..
I even wanted to go six times but my body got the boss of me, I could barely stand still without feeling pain everywhere :)

I did it a few times before i quited running (the sprinting part), but I stopped because everytime I did the sprinting the next day my left knee feels like damaged or bruised, It's like it gets rusty and it needs oil  sry that's the best way I can subscribe the pain..

I could have sworn I wrote an article on it for this site but it seems I didn't so I'll get on it!

Great, will be waiting for it!

So again thank you so much for putting your time and effort into this!
Those are good advice that I can perfectly use!

Edit: Forgot to mention about swimming and rowing, love swimming but the nearest swimming pool is bit too far for me, it's very rare that I go there..
and for rowing just like sprinting it hurts my left knee, unless you mean kajak rowing wich i only did once in my life :)

Sounds like you've done a really good job! Is quitting smoking something your trying actively to do at the moment? My Mum has some tablets she's found very helpful - I can always get the name of those for you? Good work on cutting down!

Yeah I get the same high from bodybuilding, sometimes I get these dreams that I'm flying and stuff after a few great workouts, it's crazy what a difference it can make! Let me know how you find the calorie counter - if you wanted to write a review on it I'd love to publish it on the site ;)

Lol it does really sound like you're hooked, and I just thought of another reason your muscle might be deteriorating when you're running - because you've left no time for the gym! If you're running five times a week, then anything too intensive in the gym will lead to over training. First of all - make sure you're really getting the rest to make up for that running the rest of the time. How long/far are your runs typically? Is it 10km every day? That's impressive stuff..

The minimum I'd recommend workout is probably twice a week though preferably three times. If you'd be willing to cut into your running time *a little* (don't kill me :P ) that would be great, but if not, maybe use the week days to run and the weekends to workout? For a great effective two day workout check out the push-pull workout http://www.the-biomatrix.net/best-workout-for-beginners.xhtml. Hope that helps!

thx, if it's possible would like to have the name (not sure if I'd find them here in Belgium but would luv to check)

about the 10km, I only did it once since I started back with running, it was to check if I still had it in me..
Last week continued doing 5km, this week i'm doing 6km and next 7 etc untill i'm back at 10km then I'm going to try and break my personal record in speed

If I don't loose muscles then I'll be going back to 20km (hopefully)

I did bought the calorie counter, but haven't used it yet to be honest, gotta read the manual first :D
Would gladly make a review for it later on :)

At first I was like 'Say whuuut' but then again yeah maybe cutting down will be better, I can't train 7day's a week running and gym, I use my weekend for rest from work and trainings

Thx for the link I'm going to add it in my training starting next week, i'll do monday, wednesday and friday running
tuesday and thursday push-pull workout..

Right my Mum has finally checked her phone :-P It is called Champix - which is only available here through 'Smoke Stop' which I think is a government initiative, but it may be more readily available elsewhere!

How's the calorie counter? I had a go on a racing bike yesterday, they're awesome but a little bit terrifying.

Lol and you're going for your personal record after six weeks? I like your style!

And that sounds like an excellent workout week, hope it goes well. I'm sorry you had to lose two running days :-P Keep me posted on it!

thx so much for finding out the name, I'll check with my pharma. and see if they have it

Well with the counter thingy there, I just don't get it :D gonna ask my bro to help me figure it out, because when I checked after my running it said 1440kcal  , I thought it should be more like 400-500..
the cardiocounter was around 170-180.. wouldn't know what the normal result should look like but that's what i got after running :)
What did you mean by terrifying? that you would get a number like mine (1440) :P

well at first I planned 5days a week running that's why I was going for my record after six weeks so now probably 7weeks :P :P
(you have to set goals to achieve something right..:D)

And you really have nothing to apoligize for, I'm thankfull you're helping out!

grtz!

Glad to be of service :D

And no it was the racing bike that was terrifying! Your feet are locked into the pedals and you're bent over so far forwards... So I'm creating a bike out of spare parts - racing tires on an old frame! Cycling is going to be my new CV see, I decided I don't do enough these days!

And I have completed the article I promised on different types of running training:

http://www.the-biomatrix.net/running-interval-training.htm

So after a week or so in how's the running/training balance going?

Well I'm doing ok, didn't run on monday because i overslept so have to do it on saturday
I'm now running 7km, I'm still not sure if I'm going to do 8km next week since I've cut 2days off my running.. meh.. I don't know I always talk negative when i'm home but when i'm running i'll probably do 8.. i'll see..

Instead of going to the gym I asked my brother if I could train at his home he has pretty much everything I need for powertraining..

I see alot of changes when I'm done with powertraining ofcourse this dissappears after an hour or so but atleast when i'm pumped I know how I'll look when I keep it up, tricepts are back :D bicepts is still small but i'm working on it :p I eat much better, I feel much better, my sense of smell has returned after reducing smoking
(Now when someone passes me by I immidiatly smell a smoker and I cannot believe that I used to smell like that )

I just read the review thx alot!! I think I'm going to add anabolic to my running maybe once a week..
And yes I laughed pretty hard.. I mean fartlek c'mon.. :D and laughed even more when I read 'don't laugh' :p

I fell twice last week on the same stupid spot ( I know a donkey never hits his head twice on the same stone.. I'm not a donkey!! so i did! :D) so backward running is definitly not something I'd do :)

overall it's going pretty good!

Oh racingbikes.. don't like them for the same reason you were terrified, don't like the pedals
Love mountainbikes but don't own one anymore :(

Ah great to hear it's all going well! Sounds like a full-body health drive you're pursuing and I find that's always the best way - tackling your health on many fronts and that way your body reaps all the different results at once. How's it gone fitting the push-pull routine in? Had any goes at it yet?

Lol and good you've got your smell back! Actually I'm anosmic - I've never had a sense of smell, so I know where you're coming from!

And yeah those bikes are a nightmare, but have got my old mountain bike out instead. Awesomely it's by the make Apollo and the model is 'Creed', so it's Apollo Creed in bike form  That's got to be fast!
