Upgrading Your Body and Mind With Training and Technology

The Best Activities For Improving Your BrainBy Adam Sinicki
I've written on the Biomatrix a lot in the past about brain plasticity – about how using your brain in a certain way can actually make it grow, shrink and generally change shape. Your brain is just like a muscle in your body – it is plastic and changeable and you can 'sculpt' it in the way you sculpt your body. Many people take this to mean that brain training is a good idea, and they thus play lots of brain training games such as luminosity and those Nintendo DS brain training games (a strike of marketing genius btw). However the reality is that these brain training games are only a little more useful than general computer games. Sure they involve little puzzles and they can probably sharpen your ability to focus or to use your short term memory, but are they really going to change your brain shape? Force you to use it In whole new ways? Challenge you creatively? Probably not. Those types of training do exist however, and they are in fact things that we might already do and not consider as 'brain training'. Here we will look at some of the best methods to get your brain working.
Learn a New Language: This is an incredible way to expand your brain and to help you to think in new ways. It will cause areas of your brain to grow, and at the same time it can change your very thinking patterns. Much of our thought is spoken in language in our mind, and so by being able to learn new languages we can actually liberate our brains to a degree and think more outside the box. It gives you a whole new way of phrasing and holding ideas in your mind, and that will of course really benefit your brain.
Learn Routes: Did you know that taxi drivers have heavier brains than those in any other profession? This is because they need to make all the neural connections in their brain correlating to all of the routes and directions around the city or town that they work in. This way by learning different routes you can actually make your brain physically larger much faster.
Learn a Programming Language and Use It: Programming is a great way to challenge your brain using logic and maths to create literally anything you can think of is highly rewarding and it's also a very useful skill.
Play Chess: Playing chess is such a useful way to train your brain because it forces you not only to second guess your opponent, but to think ahead and plan various contingencies. It also requires excellent memory, concentration and focus to remember all the squares that you own and where you can and can't go.
