Machiavelli Quotes and Lessons

Machiavelli Quotes and Lessons

By Adam Sinicki

If you have any interest in politics, business or general psychological warfare, then you may well have heard of Machiavelli – a highly influential figure whose writings though over 500 year old still hold shocking relevance today. You might also have heard of him if you've played Assassin's Creed...

Machiavelli Quotes and Lessons

If you haven't heard of him then allow me to enlighten you – essentially he was the ancient Italian version of Sun Tsu – a strategist and an advisor to politicians. It was his book The Prince that he wrote as a gift for the then-prince, that outlined many of the strategies necessary for ensuring success and the loyalty of the subjects, and which made 'Machiavellian' a by-word for subtle strategy. Today that book is still in circulation and has helped many people to succeed in politics, in business, in relationships and in life – giving them a cut throat edge as well as the ability to form their own power plays. Perfect then for a psychological warfare article.

Following are several Machiavelli quotes and lessons from the man himself that we can apply to all kinds of daily situations and remember when you're stuck or when you need direction inspiration or a way to manipulate your opponents. We all need to manipulate our opponents from time to time...

Machiavelli Quotes

Never was anything great achieved without danger.

Meaning of course that we need to take risks if we are going to be successful. The greater the risk the greater the reward and this can be seen whether it's making an investment in a company or whether it's playing chess.

Where the willingness is great, the difficulties cannot be great.

This just suggests that you need to do what you like. This then improves your enjoyment of the work, as well as it's quality. If you find yourself with some kind of mental block such as a writers' block then you should change the work in order to make it more interesting. As a novelist if ever I get writers' block it's normally because I don't want to write the scene. The solution is not to force my way through it and create something dull, but to change the scene in some way in order to make it more engaging and enjoyable. If you enjoy writing it, this improves the likelihood of your readers enjoying reading it.

Whosoever desires constant success must change his conduct with the times.

This of course reflects the importance of adapting with the times. The Dinosaurs didn't and look at them – their profits are severely dwindled. You need in fact to not only adapt with the times, but to lead them, and to change before it becomes an issue.

Men ought to be well treated or crushed, because they can avenge themselves of lighter injuries, of more serious ones they cannot.

This is among many Machiavelli quotes a demonstration of Machievelli's well known ruthlessness that has made him the source of some controversy. That said they're still wise words – treat people nicely when possible but if you are going to make a move then make sure you commit to it and destroy them utterly – otherwise they will just fester and come back stronger. Nowhere is this truer than martial arts where you need to fully commit to every move if you're going to stop them.

Entrepreneurs are simply those who understand that there is little difference between obstacle and opportunity and are able to turn both to their advantage.

This is very literally true when you consider that what most business is based on is creating solutions to the problems of clients.

The first method for estimating the intelligence of a ruler is to look at the men he has around him.

Intelligence begets intelligence, but furthermore, the act of surrounding yourself with intelligent employees or colleagues will mean that every aspect of your business is handled by the best people possible and this will ensure the best possible service or product.

The wise man does at once what the fool does finally.

One of my favourite Machiavelli quotes. In other words – act swiftly and decisively. There are many reasons for this – it makes you appear more confident and certain in your actions, and it means you get the most from your decisions with the smallest amount of time wasted. If you're going to do something – do it – otherwise you are just wasting unnecessary time and money.

And when neither their property nor honour is touched, the majority of men live content, and he has only to contend with the ambition of a few, whom he can curb with ease in many ways.

If you don't want to make unnecessary enemies, then don't attack their belongings or their pride. Particularly in today's world it's important to avoid causing affront to someone's pride, and this is often the cause of many disputes and conflicts.

A prince ought to have no other aim or thought, nor select anything else for his study, than war and its rules and discipline; for this is the sole art that belongs to him who rules, and it is of such force that it not only upholds those who are born princes, but it often enables men to rise from a private station to that rank.

If you don't believe him then you've clearly never seen Conan or Gladiator. In other words – keep checking back to the Biomatrix and reading the psychological warfare section.
