Massage Technique

By Hannah Bunce

Massage is a great way to soothe tired muscles and calm yourself if you are feeling stressed, as well as an excellent way to crank up the romance with that special somebody in your life. If you are looking to train in massage, it can take time to perfect your technique, but learning to massage someone is actually simpler than it looks, especially a back and shoulder massage. Light those candles, turn up the soothing music, and try these simple massage techniques and see how easy it is to impress someone with a good massage.

Before starting a massage, make sure that the person you are massaging is feeling comfortable, either lying down or sitting down. Make sure to that you use enough oil to ensure that your movements during the massage are smooth; if you need to you can top up during the massage.

When massaging the back, start with long strokes running parallel to the spine, starting at the base of the back and running up to the top. Make sure that you keep the pressure moderate; too light and your partner will not feel your efforts, too heavy and they will be in pain. Also try making long strokes from the spine to the side of the back, running up the back. This can be especially effective if you put one hand on top of the other to do this, providing a little more pressure.

Using your forearms to massage the back is a great way of providing pressure onto a greater area of the back, and is a good sensation for the person you are massaging. Make sure that your forearms move well in the oil; if needs be put some more oil onto your arms. If there is a particular area that you want to work on, using your thumbs can really help you to work out small aches and pains. Using your thumb to massage the spine is also an effective move, especially when starting at the bottom and slowly working your way up to the top.

When massaging the shoulders, using circular motions and gently squeezing as you go is a good move to use. Increasing the pressure will help to decrease any pain there may be there, but remember not to make the pressure too heavy. Likewise, gentle long or circular motions when massaging the neck will help to loosen it and lose any stiffness.
