Parkour as Self DefenceBy Adam Sinicki
Parkour is the art of getting from one point to the other as quickly as possible, and as a result many people have mentioned the benefit of this in terms of how it allows you to avoid danger and get away from pursuers. However what it neglects to point out is just how good parkour is as actual self defence – as in retaliation, and of the true martial application of either this or free running. So how can you kick someone's ass by running away? Well if you're asking this question then you clearly haven't watched enough Jackie Chan films (no one you could argue has watched enough Jackie Chan films), who demonstrates aptly how to use your environment as a form of self defence (and who should clearly be credited with creating parkour in the first place. Here we will look at some ways that you can utilise parkour moves in an offensive manner.
Everyone knows how important it is to capture the high ground but few people really look at just how useful this is for fighting still in a street setting. Imagine you're attached then – you run up onto a ledge or a building to get away, and then when they try and follow, by getting up, you can simply kick them back down (their hands and attention will be busy when they're climbing). They have two choices - turn away or fall from a height. You can use the precise same technique by putting an obstacle between you and them – simply jump over a railing then when they try and climb it knock them back over it.
Using Gravity
If you are high up, or jumping, or springing off something, then you can use that momentum to add extra force when you pummel someone. The best move is the swinging kick which has been seen in almost every 80s action film – just jump and grab the nearest tree branch, bus shelter, door frame and then swing into your opponent legs first to take them down.
Evasive Manoeuvres
You can also use parkour to evade an attack by leap frogging over someone, or by rolling to one side. This way you'll also be very quickly in a place they didn't expect you to be in and from here you can easily get the drop on them. You can also evade in other ways too – for example, evade a sweep by lifting your legs over the sweep while holding on top something else. Jackie Chan uses this one often, and will often also use an item to block by heading behind it.
Hiding
You can also use parkour to hide rather than run. While this isn't really self defence per-se it does mean you can hide and then leap out at people. Swing up onto a bus shelter and then you get the chance to leap out later – this way the element of surprise is entirely on your side.
High Kick
A kick to the face is an incredibly powerful blow. To pull one off with style, launch yourself off of another item – a wall for instance – and you'll gain more height to face-kick even the tallest enemy.
Pulling
I didn't know how else to head this up, but here's a move – grab their arm, leap over a railing, and then smack their arm down hard on the railing as you land the other side. Snaaaaaap! Similarly you could run up on top of a building while holding their arm, or even over a gap.
Launching Items
From the high ground another thing you can do is to launch items – run and climb up onto a roof and then lob objects down at anyone who tries to follow!
