Upgrading Your Body and Mind With Training and Technology
Three Real FightsBy Adam Sinicki
![]() Three Real Fights I Was In and What They Taught MeI've done martial arts for many years now and they've taught me a lot. They've taught me to kick (that's somethimg that people with no martial arts training always seem just shocking at, they've taught me a range of cool moves (which I've mostly just used to look cool around the house) and they've helped me to block almost instinctively. However while this is all very good and well they're still really no comparison to getting into a real fight and actually being in that situation. When this hapens suddenly all the rules go out the window and I'v learned more from my three real fights than I did from years of martial arts. Thus I shall pass on my accumulated wisdom so that you may benefit from it without having to be pummelled yourself. Fight 1I'll go in chronological order. This one started back at shool and was actually what made me start Karate. Not because I lost understand; but because I won so convincingly that I realised this was something I was skilled at (it might have also been something to do with Jackie Chan's influence). It wasn't a knockout but it would definitely have been a unanimous decision. Basically I'd been playing Shenmue and I thus thought that I was Ryu. This meant that when I was told I couldn't go into my classroom because there were a couple of bruisers in there, I decided to go and sit next to them and start annoying them. This then caused the ring leader to stand up and square off against me so I squared back. He then started throwing hooks which were absolutely useless and came at about three miles an hour. This of course allowed me to duck under them (helped by the large down arrow that was flashing up on my eyes thanks to too much Shenmue (Shenmue you got me into this now get me out!). This went on for ages and taught me something I would learn again later - I cannot bring myself to punch someone. This was despite everyone saying 'punch him Sinicki'. It just wouldve been too gross and would have escalated the situation. Eventually he decided to change strategies and throw a kick which I caught and used to throw him overbsome tables, niiiice (later people said I picked a table up and threw it at him, I ce not to correct them). I then followed this up by launching myself at him and using pressure points in his skull to give him a headache. This looked quite brutal I think - too shy to punch someone but crushing their skull is fine. My granddad Bernard had taught me these moves though and they served me well all through my childhood. Unfortunately I let him back up and this scenario continued indefinitely until the teacher came to split it up (spoil sport). Here learned that goons like right hooks, and that I can fight other ways than throwing punches. I also did the right thing by not taking away his dignity - I gae him no reason to come back with a hammer and eight friends. That said the whole event did a lot more for my street cred than it did for his.
Fight 2This one was more serious because the guys were trying to mug me. I was in Bournemouth with a friend when I was in my college years and coming out of Sega world when some guys who were mayb a couple of years older than us stopped us and asjed for money. I said no, at which pointnthe guy demanded I show him my wallet to prove I didn't have any. I said obviously not at which point his friend said 'do you know who this is??'. Literally not. That then aggravated the apparent celebrity enough that he got me in a head lock. My response was to take out his legs which caused us to fall and hit a bonet setting off the car alarm (cool). My friend ran to get help, which to be honest wasn't helpful. I did martial arts and bodybuilding by this stage so I managed to pull the guy's grip off and I remember noting happily how shocked the other guy looked when I did it. Almost l I had just shat on his idol. Untunately though his idol then grabbed me again and I realised I neeeded to hurt him in order to bring this to a close. So I rememered a karate move that my friend Rob taught me (annoying as I was very competetive with him and he did a different style from me). I grabbed the guy's little finger and then I yanked it backwards. Nothing happeed and I realised I hadn't been brutal enough... I needed to commit. So I grabed it again amd really thrust it backwards as hard as I could and at that point I felt the bone crunch backwards and down. He let go immediately looking pale and then ran off. A solid win again. This time I learned a few things - again you should try different techniques as punching is something that most normal people have a hard time with. Meanwhile you should make sure to really commit to your moves - don't do things by half and don't hold back because they won't. Fight 3This one didn't go so well. Essentially it started out of the blue - I was going home from a night out with friends when a group guys came walking towards us saying 'why you jipping us' (it would later transpire that Rob *was* jipping them but I was oblivious to this at the time). So I said 'well we weren't were we?' and then got punched in the face. Normally there's some talking and threatening first but not so today. The guy's eyes were wild like he was on drugs too. Rather than go down or run or ay sorry then, I instead opted to say 'hey Craig, I think this guy punched me but I didn't feel anything - did he punch me? Unfortunately, I genuinely couldn't feel it because I was so inebriated so I thought this was all a bit of a laugh - even though Craig was shaking his head as though to say 'yeah man... They really did...'. ![]() They then hit me again and I tried to block but failed. Then what seemed like an army of them came out of the woodworks and started fighting my mates. I was surrounded by four of them all muvh taller and decided I couldn't run and risk leaving my mates, but shouldn't hurt one and escalate the situation so another stabbed me. That and I was too drunk to think. To keep my honour in tact though I decided it would be a good idea to taunt them and make jokes. Eventually after 8 punches I went down and realised my friends were gone (they kind of had to) and that being pummelled on the floor actually is serious and generally not a laugh. So I opted to flee by quoting Optimus Prime first 'you'll never stop at one... I'll take you all on', pusbing one and then rolly pollying away (bad call on concrete with a busted head). Fortunately they did not give chase, probably because they were fucking confused. Walking around it seemed like a Warzone and there were fights happening everywhere. I felt my face and realised it had a big hole in it that let me touch my teeth... Not cool. I put the thougt to the back of mind and found Simon before collapsing in an alley way to hide while he phoned an ambulance. That one didn't go so well... From this I learned that fighting drunk is hard, but also again how important the psychological element is. To win against one I should have punched him straight in the gut as soon as he came over. The gut is easier to go for psychologically, and getting in there first is all-important. You know when someone is going to start so don't give them the chance to. In my situation I'm not sure what I should have done... Though I have become more interested in concealed weapons. I also could have maybe climbed on a bus stop. Generally I'd need to think out the box. I reiterate though: get less drunk. I've also learned - that they are always going to throw the first punch as a right hook and it's better to duck than it is to block. If I were to do this again? I'd hit the aggressor in the stomach early on hopefully making them double over, and I'd then thrust kick them in the face or lift them upside down. Punching in the gut is underrated I think - no one expects it, it's hard to see coming and it's easier to get over the psychological block. Then I should have climbed onto a bus shelter/run into the gardens. Again though having lots of people there and being drunk makes that hard... Either way it's fair to say there was stuff I could have done better...
