The Road to Recovery

The Journey to Recovery

By Rich Silverton

I am currently recuperating from a knee reconstruction surgery and I now know how difficult it is to stay positive through this lengthy progress. That is why I am here to show you how to cope with the long lay off and keep your spirits up. What I am going to do is give you a sort of diary of how it went for me and add some tips in there for you readers.

Day 1 - Operation Day - You can not eat 24 hours before your surgery or drink 8 hours before. Great start to the day. You usually have to get to the hospital about 7 hours before having the op. Now this really is a pain in the arse. Tip 1 is to bring something to read or listen to. The choice of material at the hospital ranges from 'Gardeners' World' to 'Carrots of England'. Not the most interesting of things to read or to take your mind off the impending surgery. At some point the surgeon and the anethsitist will come into see you and explain the procedure. Tip 2 - Don't even pretend to understand what they are talking about just nod your head and look blankly at them, they will soon get the hint and shut up. You are then called for the operation where you will get the anaesthetic and they will then do the surgery. When you awaken the operation will be over and you have the long stretch of rehabilitation to do. Tip 3 - Do not except the toast they offer after you come round. Hospital food is shit and that includes them being able to somehow bollock up how to make toast. Now get some sleep.

Day 3 - Going Home - Now I skipped Day 2 as it is pointless. You sit in your bed and go to sleep again. You finally get to go home, however first the physio will come along to see if you are fit enough to be released. Warning- These people are unlike normal humans. They fail to realise you have just been cut open and talk to you as if you are four. Ignore them as much as possible whilst they prod you. Now the most important thing. Find a wheelchair to get you out of the hospital and into the car. They are like goldust even though there must be thousands of them in the building. Just twat people with your crutches to get into one of them.

Days 4-18- Recovering at Home - Now at this point you can't do anything, your hobbling around on crutches and just sitting on your arse. Tip 4 - Find a television series on DVD that can keep your interest. Something like 24 or Prison Break can take away those boring hours of day time TV. Also milk the pain for as much as it is worth. This is probably the only time that people will do whatever you want when you want! Take advantage of that. It's also good to have your mates around you at this time to keep your spirits up. Even if (like my mates) they take the piss out of you because you look like a cripple!

Day 19 - Rehab - This is the point when you can actually get up off your arse and do something. Firstly you get to meet your physio. Now I dont know why I had high expectations but I have never met a pretty physio and do you know what that is a terrible thing! These are the people that are going to massage your injury or poke and prod it. Tip 5 - Imagine your physio is someone hot. May I recommend Cheryl Tweedy, Jessica Alba, Tara Reid etc. By concentrating on this the pain they are putting you under doesnt feel as bad. Warning - Refrain from getting a stiffy as could cause embarrassment for you and your physio! They will then more than likely give you a training plan to stick to. Try your best to concentrate on what they are saying as you will almost certainly forget the exercises if you don't.

Days 20-35 - Starting training Now you will probably have to go to do the hospital 3-4 times a week to do the physios programme. Tip 6 - Do not do extra work at home. The physio gave you the plan for a reason. Don't overdo it no matter how bored you are! This is also the perfect time to start getting up and about. Tip 7 - Never go to Leeds, it's a shithole and has no redeeming features.

So this is where I am up to for my rehabilitation. Although its a long journey I hope these tips will make it slightly easier. Finally Tip 8 - Never give up. Whatever you are recovering from it will get better at some point so keep going.
