The Ryan Reynolds Workout

The Ryan Reynolds Workout

By Adam Sinicki

Ryan Reynolds is a man who has it all – he has the face, he has the charm, he has the abs... it's no wonder that men want to be him and women want him (and sometimes the other way around). No wonder that he once married Scarlet Johansson (the basatrd!). No wonder he's played three different superheroes (including the epic Deadpool!). In fact Ryan Reynold's body and head are so good that it hardly even matters that he seems to have made only about three half-good films in his career. Thanks to the effort he put into the Ryan Reynolds workout and diet he managed to get voted the sexiest man alive. Seriously come on!
So the question is, how do you emulate that success and start building that kind of physique? I'm afraid I can't help you with the marriage and I can't help you to get his facial features – but I do happen to know a little bit about the Ryan Reynolds workout and about the Ryan Reynolds diet, and being a kind sort of guy I'm going to share that with you here.

Ryan Reynolds Diet

Let's start with the Ryan Reynolds diet. The thing about Ryan (yes he and I are on first name terms) is that he's incredibly ripped or at least he was after the Blade workout and Green Lantern workout – he used to look a little different. In fact in his prime Reynolds managed got himself down to 3% body fat which is Stallone/Bruce Lee territory. Nice going Ry.
He told Men's Health that the Ryan Reynolds diet didn't involve starving himself though (few). Instead it involved a few sensible changes to his usual routine. These included:

Choose Well: Another of the mantras of the Ryan Reynolds is equally simple – choose to eat healthy alternatives to the snacks and cakes. It's all obvious stuff you already knew.

Small Meals: Just like fashion supermodels, the Ryan Reynolds diet involves eating multiple smaller meals instead of a couple of big ones. Rather he ate six smaller meals and this prevents the body from storing fat.

Home Cooking: The Ryan Reynolds diet recommends cooking for yourself – because you can this way ensure that only the goodest goodness goes into it. Bobby Reynolds was the man in charge of the Ryan Reynolds Green Lantern workout, and he personally cooked for Ryan during this time. When Bobby made bolognaise he would use 97% fat-free ground bison instead of shitty Sainsburies mince. So choose wisely and discriminately (preeetty sure that's a word...).

The Ryan Reynolds diet also included a lot of eggs, tuna, protein bars, fish and chicken and steamed rice and apples as his form of carbohydrates. He also ate a fair amount of salad.
So in other words the take home message to start with is to eat smart. He didn't do anything drastic like cut out all food that wasn't yellow – he just followed a sensible programme.

Ryan Reynolds Supplements

Supplements were also a big part of Ryan Reynold's diet, and what he recommends is creatine (for energy), L-glutamine (an important amino acid used for building muscle), conjugated linoleic acid (CLA), multivitamins and whey protein powder. That's his stack so give it a go!

Ryan Reynolds Training Routine

Okay so the Ryan Reynolds diet and supplements play a big part of getting you his ripped and pumped physique; but what we're really all interested in is the Ryan Reynolds training routine. That's where things get fun (if you're a sociopath like myself...).
Bobby Strom was Ryan Reynold's personal trainer, and he made him specific tailored workouts for several of his major film roles.

The Ryan Reynolds Deadpool Workout

For Wolverine the Ryan Reynolds workout involved a good old-fashioned split routine. That means doing separate body parts on different days. What this then allows you to do is to hit each body part really hard with high intensity in order to gain muscle fast – as that muscle group would then have the rest of the week in order to rest and recover afterward. Read this article on how to increase intensity in bodybuilding.
The resource I found stated that Ryan Reynold's training routine for Wolverine involved five separate workouts: chest, back, shoulders, arms, and legs and that he trained each for two to three hours a day. Looking at his physique you can believe that he put that kind of work in. You don't need to do that – one hour a day will be fine if you use very hard intensity; and I'd also recommended splitting the 'arms' day into two days: biceps and triceps. This then gives you one day's rest to achieve a similar effect.
The Deadpool workout then is pretty straight forward and normal – just quite intense. It would need to be in order to stand next to the Hugh Jackman workout.

The Ryan Reynolds Green Lantern Workout

The Green Lantern workout will have been very similar to the Wolverine workout – looking at his physique in each, there is in fact not too much difference between his body in each film. However from what I've read Bobby emphasized that the Ryan Reynolds Green Lantern diet should include more compound movements – those being the moves that use multiple body parts at once and that thus stimulate the production of a lot of positive hormones such as growth hormone which trigger more growth. This would have resulted in a slightly bulkier appearance for Green Lantern compared to Deadpool – though the difference is minor.
I guess he ate lots of broccoli to get that green...

My Advice for Ryan Reynold's Body

There's a lot of conflicting advice when you look around the net and it's hard to know precisely what Ryan would have done. It's a bit over simplified too. Better is to just ask me what I think... Seriously though, by looking at his physique it's easy to make some pretty good guesses...

First of all, Ryan Reynold's six pack is intense. To get a Ryan Reynolds six pack of your own you need to do a lot of ab work and that means lots of crunches and sit ups etc. However don't forget those all important obliques – those are the bits that go up the side of the abs and this is what will make you look truly ripped. To use those, use twisting sit ups and other movements that twist. Hold a cable curl machine and do a golf swing with resistance for instance.
Another point is that he is bulky while still being incredibly ripped. How do you mimic that? Well simple – you bulk and then you cut. To achieve this you want to eat everything for a while and train hard using low repetitions and a heavy weight, and by doing high intensity. The idea is to hurt a lot very quickly, then rest a lot and have a lot of protein shake.
Then when you're all bulky you cut out a lot of carbs, you start doing a lot of cardiovascular exercise and you change to doing high repetitions of low weights. Your body will be then starved of energy and it will burn your fat reserves (and it will do this before it burns the bulky muscle). You then have stripped away the little bit of fat you added on during the bulky phase to reveal just lean, ripped muscle and a Ryan Reynolds six pack.
Bulking and cutting is what most real bodybuilders do and looking at Ry it's the easiest way you can replicate the Ryan Reynolds workout too. Then all you have to do is to eat only the carbs you need and continue to fuel/train those muscles. Step two: locate Scarlet Johansson...
