Smart Supplements

Taking supplements is a great way to capitalise on any work you do down at the gym and a great way to speed up your gains and improve the amount of positive impact you get from working out in the gym. However it's not just taking any old supplements any old way that will get you in tip-top shape – to be successful with it you need to know how to take them, when to take them and how to take them for the best results. You need to think about smart supplementing – not just gorging on a whole load of drugs (this can be fun but ultimately lethal). Here we will look at what the difference is when you're taking supplements smartly as opposed to just blindly running into it by addressing a few pointers that you might have missed. Read on:

Check the Ingredients: When you take lots of supplements that means you have a 'stack' – a stack meaning your supply of various bodybuilding drugs. However you shouldn't think of this as a list of different products, but as a list of different ingredients and you need to ensure that you don't overdose with these. In other words lots of things have vitamin B6 in them to create the feeling of an energy boost taking them – but if you get around 600% of your RDA then you may be overdosing and this can cause nerve damage. So in other words, just keep a tabs on what specific ingredients you are ingesting.

Cycle: Did you know that some supplements are better off cycled than just taken in one go? This means taking the supplement for a few days and then staying off it for a few days before starting again. Find out whether or not this is the case by looking online and seeing what's recommended – it won't always be on the packet. A supplement that works this way is any testosterone booster for instance, but many others also recommend cycles.

Loading: Loading means taking the supplement in higher doses for a while so that you basically fill your body with something akin to a back up supply. This 'loading phase' normally last around five days and is common with supplements such as creatine. However that said some people claim that certain products don't really need to have a loading phase, but that this is just a clever way for supplement companies to sell more (because you eat it all in the first week).

Timing: When you take your supplements is also important. For instance you should be aware that protein shake and any other similar products are best taken before your body enters an 'anabolic state' (a state of rebuilding). Thus you should take these products at night just before bed, or straight after a workout. Likewise some supplements are better taken with food, while others – such as vitamin tablets – are better taken on an empty stomach.

Research: In other words then research and make sure you start taking these products armed with all the facts, debates and latest research. It will make a huge difference for you. Hang on a second... aren't there a whole lot of supplement reviews on this website? Well I never... that could come in handy!
