The Law of Attraction
The Law of Attraction
By Adam Sinicki
The
law of attraction is
something that comes from a school called 'new thought' which is a
slightly metaphysical and hippyish school of thought. However the
premise is sound and is one that we can apply a lot to our personal
success and productivity. In fact it can apply to any area of your
life and there are many proven reasons that it can work to bring you
more success and happiness no matter what you're doing.
So What is the Law of Attraction?
The law of attraction basically states that 'like attracts like' and
that positive thoughts and attitudes bring about positive results. Of
course at the same time it is fair to say that negative thoughts and
attitudes bring about negative results.
In other words then, if you are more positive and optimistic you
will have a more successful and happy life – whereas if you are a
misery boots you're going to get crapped on all the time. Of course
an element of this is down to perception and cognitive bias – if
you are positive then you can of course interpret an event as a more
positive one than someone who was a negative character might. But it
does go further than that too and studies has actually shown that a
positive outlook can lead to more luck.
Further more it doesn't just apply to the general terms of
positivity and negativity, but also to very specific things. For
instance if you dress more smartly and act more successful then you
will be more likely to get a successful job and more success.
Likewise if you own lots of nice things you will find you tend to
accumulate more nice things. Your friends will be more like you, and
your relationships will be dictated by the way you act. Getting quite
dizzy? Well I'll outline the actual psychological principles behind
this in a minute.
Like Attracts Like
One big reason for all this is that like attracts like. In
relationships this works very well and this is a big area where the
law of attraction applies. In fact this works all the way down to our
genetics and our appearance – we have been shown to be more
attracted to people who look like us and of course we will tend to
pull people who are roughly the same level of attractiveness as we
are.
Furthermore though we attract people who are like us. Want to meet a
scientist girlfriend? There are few better ways than to start showing
an interest in science yourself. Likewise people tend to treat people
the way they are treated by them. So if you want a peaceful and happy
relationship then treat your partner sensitively and kindly and they
will reciprocate. This applies for all your relationships – not
just your romantic ones. The way you act, is the way you will be
treated.
Another example of
like attracting
like is how you might find yourself accumulating nice things in
something of a snow-ball effect. If you are wealthy and you have lots
of nice things for instance, then come Christmas people will think
that you have high standards and they will need to buy you nice
things in order for you to appreciate them (whether or not this is
true). It would of course make much more sense for them to buy nicer
things for people who had less
as
they would appreciate
them more, but the reality is that the better off you are, the more
expensive gifts will flock your way.
Money of course also attracts money, and in order to make a lot of
money you need to have a lot of money. This time you can put it in a
bank and live off of interest, or you can invest it into various
areas of business or buy stocks and shares. Likewise the smarter you
get the smarter you'll be able to become. These are examples of the
'snowball effect'. Machiavelli meanwhile says that the best way to
estimate the intelligence or calibre of a ruler, is to look at the
calibre of the men around him. Why? Because like attracts like
stoopid.
The Self Fulfilling Prophecy
Another reason that the law of attraction works so well is because
of another law this time from psychology called the 'self fulfilling
prophecy'. This explains how believing we are a certain way results
in us becoming that way.
For instance if we go back momentarily to relationships let's
imagine that you think you're God's gift to women (or men). From here
you go up to every hottie you see and start chatting, you ask for
their number and if you get turned down then you move on. Apart form
anything else, dating is a game of numbers, and by speaking to more
people you are greatly increasing your chances of success. Meanwhile
though, at the same time you will come across as more confident and
attractive and this will say to women that you think you are in their
league. They will think that if you are confident then you must be
wealthy, attractive, smart, experienced and generally an up together
person who knows who they are. Otherwise – why would you be
confident?
Self Fulfilling Prophecies in Business
Now let's look at
business.
Imagine that you think you are the best businessman in the world.
From here you will go on to dress in a suit and to do your hair
better. This immediately will open you up to more employment
opportunities as you look more like someone who knows what they're
doing and who is used to working with lots of money (they say that
the more money you are responsible for, the more you should spend on
your hair cut (they also say to dress for the job you want
not
the job you've got
(I would argue this is untrue if you want to be a wrestler and you
work in an office...))). This will make people assume you are better
at your job than you necessarily are and you'll be given more
responsibility and eventually be more likely to get a promotion.
At the same time you will find that you end up more likely to take
risks and gambles, and that will make you better at investing and at
breaking the mould. You'll be more likely to put yourself forward for
things and you'll generally be a far more aggressive business man or
woman.
Self Fulfilling Prophecies in Health
Just to demonstrate how you can
apply this to literally anything, let's look at how the law of
attraction can affect health. Of course if you think you are healthy
and strong then this will greatly improve your ability to perform on
the bench press or across long distance runs – your brain can
actually recruit more muscle fibres to help you achieve those things.
At the same time though if you are positive and optimistic this will
boost your immune system and if you're optimistic it's shown that you
will be more likely to recover from any
illness
– while stress
of course taxes your immune system and leaves you open to attack.
Think you're healthy and sprightly and full of beans? Then you'll be
far more likely to stay that way.
Luck
Finally it is believed that the law of attraction can help us to be
more lucky. Now of course this seems pretty bizarre, but if you think
that people who are more confident will be more likely to take risks,
to have the tools necessary to succeed, and to interpret events as
successes then it's no wonder they report themselves as luckier.
However what doesn't
make
quite so much sense
is the fact that it is believed that being more optimistic can also
make you genuinely more likely to be lucky in random trials – such
as flipping the coin. There are several studies to support this, but
thus far science is stumped as to what the explanation is. It's a
mystery!
How to Get Happy
We all know that we should 'don't worry, get happy', but how do you
break out of the downward spiral once you start having negative
thoughts? Well one way is through exposure – get yourself out there
and do more and you'll learn you're capable of more than you probably
thought. Another method is to use positive affirmations – just
repeat in your head that you can do something and you will find that
eventually it becomes habit. Likewise use the 'CBT' (cognitive
behavioural therapy) technique of 'mindfulness' in order to listen
out for negative thoughts you might be thinking and to try and get
rid of those.
Facial Feedback
Here's one last thing to try right now though. Feeling glum, down or
generally indifferent? Well try smiling as you read this and hold it
for a minute. Notice your mood lift up? That's called facial feedback
– and it happens when you see other people smiling too. Positivity
is contagious!
