The Ultimate Smoothie

The Ultimate Smoothie

By Hannah Bunce

Smoothies are currently vogue in the world of chilled drinks; available in every supermarket, splashed all over the diet pages of magazines and recommended by every celebrity going. And with good reason too as smoothies not only taste amazing (well, depending on what you have put together in your blender) but are simple to make (fruit ? blender, nice!) and are perhaps the easiest way to munch your way through your five a day in one sitting! Creating smoothies can also give you the chance to be creative about what you blend together, and everyone quickly learns what tastes good together and what doesn't. However, those who are serious about their smoothies know that there are certain fruits which not only taste great in a smoothie, but help to create the beverage that is perfect for you.

Knowing the benefits of different fruits can help you to create the smoothie that will benefit you the most. For some people it's all about the energy while for others antioxidants are take precedent. Here we recommend some of the best fruits to mix up in your smoothie to make sure that you are drinking the right fruit for you.

Energy

As every smoothie fanatic will tell you, bananas are the perfect ingredient for your smoothie, and most smoothies you find will include bananas as their base ingredient. Bananas are a fantastic source of potassium, which is great for building muscles and lowering your risk of high blood pressure. Bananas are also a great source of energy for people on the go. Other fruits which are great at naturally increasing your energy levels are berries, particularly blueberries and strawberries, and citrus fruits.

Antioxidants

Antioxidants seem set to remain the biggest buzzword in health, and with good reason. Antioxidants are used by the body in a wide variety of ways, including improving the immune system and digestive system, protecting the heart, and improving skin quality. The fruit that drives antioxidant fans nuts is blueberries, which are packed so full of antioxidants there's barely any room left for their other benefits, which include reducing high blood pressure. Other berries such as blackberries, strawberries and raspberries are also highly recommended for upping your antioxidant intake, as are cantaloupe melons and red grapes.

Immune System

Regularly eating fruit will ensure that your immune system is kept in good condition and working to protect you from illness and feeling down. However some fruits are particularly kind to the immune system, and filling your diet with these will help to ensure that you don't catch the cold that's making the rounds. Kiwis are the best fruit for ensuring that you have a high level of vitamin C in your diet, giving you twice as much of the super vitamin than an orange. Citrus fruits are also a great source of vitamin C, and squeezing orange, lemon or lime juice into your smoothie will help to keep you fighting fit. Other fruits to consider include strawberries and blueberries.

Iron

It is always important to ensure that you are getting enough iron in your diet. Iron is used by the body to aid transporting oxygen to the muscles and organs, meaning that if you aren't getting enough you are more prone to feeling tired and experiencing decreased work performance. Iron is also used by the body to ensure general good health. Fruits are a great source of iron, and if you are looking for a way to get more iron into your life, cherries are a great place to start. The benefits of cherries are far reaching and also include lowering cholesterol and increasing the health of your heart. Other fruits to mix in your iron-boosting smoothie include red grapes and apricots.

Weight Loss

If you are trying to lose weight, smoothies are the perfect choice for you. Being so tightly packed with fruit, they will fill you up and stop you from snacking during the day. They are also a lot tastier than some of the bland diet foods out there. Certain fruits have lower calorie counts than others, and it you are looking for the best fruit to lose weight with, perhaps the best fruit for you is the humble apple which has a particularly low calorie count of around 80 calories per medium-sized apple. Other superfruits to whisk up with your apple include apricots (20 calories per apricot), pink grapefruit (48 calories per half grapefruit) and red grapes (one cup has around 65 calories).

Vasodilation

For bodybuilders, vasodilation rocks. You can get it from the highly expensive supplement 'NO2'; but you can also get it from raw garlic and even better - betroot. So for the ultimate bodybuilding smoothie and for anyone else who likes the sound of decreased blood pressure and increased flow of nutrients to the body, add betroot to your smoothie. Vasodilation basically means that your blood vessels become thicker, allowing the flow of more blood around the body carrying more oxygen and nutrients to the muscles and elsewhere for improved energy and function. It also means gnarly Stallone-type veins. Which rocks.
