How to Work For YourselfEasy Business Model Ideas + How to do My JobBy Adam SinickiIn my last article on this site I wrote about the joys of working for yourself for your own self respect, freedom and finances. I wrote about how pandering to the wants of others in an industry you have no interest in is not the way things were meant to be and plain not cool. Now I'm going to share with you precisely how to escape that situation and tell you some jobs you can do that you can start right now working from home. You don't need to quit your day job yet even – just start doing this in the evenings.
My Work From Home Job Explained – Become a Freelance Writer
Here's how I work from home. That's the method I know best and it's a method that anyone with good English skills can use so it seemed like a good example to start with. This is step for step exactly what I did to make sure I never had to have a stressful interview again by becoming a freelance writer. It really is one of the easiest working for yourself ideas.
Step 1 – Advertise on a webmaster forumThis could be 'Digital Point', 'Wild Fire' or any other. Just search Digital Point in Google to find the forum where everyone is chatting about how to earn money from home. Go on 'Buy, Sell, Trade' and then go to 'Content'. On here you then make an advert saying 'Freelance Writer – All topics, degree in 'blah', plenty of experience, accepts payment by PayPal'. I charge between $7-$10 per 500 words (about £4).
Step 2 – Do it WellNow that might sound like shit money, but what I've done is just learn to focus. And if I tell you that I can write 10,000 very high quality words in 3 hours, you suddenly realise why this is a more than adequate salary. At the same time I can then pick it up any time during the weekend etc in order to earn more when it suits me and when I need it. The secret to success though is just to be really good at it and to never miss a deadline. Be polite and friendly in e-mails and make sure you are 100% professional. I once hired a freelance writer for this site and the work took 2 weeks longer than promised. Surprisingly I never used them again. I myself have never once broken a promised deadline and I've had some of my clients for over 2 years now. That's the simple difference. It's incredibly stable work and if it dried up I could even offer to work at $5 per 500 words and just work an extra two hours a day. It's not the end of the world.
So there you go, that's how I became freelance. It's easy and you could advertise on a Friday night and work over the weekend to give it a test and see if it's for you (if you want higher pay and more glory, try applying to magazines by writing to their editors). Alternatively if that's not for you then there are lots of other work for yourself ideas you could use that are along the same lines. I'll show you what those are. Again any of these you can start right now.
More Work For Yourself Ideas
Sell Software – I'm starting with this way of working for yourself because it's another one I do. I have two pieces of killer-app software which aren't hard to programme but are just good ideas. I sell these on Digital Point to other webmasters. Learning Visual Basic took me two nights so you can do it easily (I'm currently learning Java). If you look into apps, which is a next step for me then that's a whole world of opportunity again. Remember you don't have to use just one of these working for yourself ideas – you can use all of them at once if you prefer. That's the genius of being self employed... You could also of course offer programming services on the webmaster forums again.
Buy and Sell Articles - This is a business I tried (visit www.iwantyourwords.com) which I was very pleased with but unfortunately quickly got bored of. However if it's more your type of thing it's a very easy way to make money. Advertise on Craig's List or Gumtree for writers willing to work for tippence (they're out there trust me) then get them to handle the writing you get from DP. Just advertise yourself as a 'writing team'. You literally don't have to do anything now.
Run a Website – As you know this is another business I'm into myself. To run a website all you need is again a good idea and a lot of determination. Write regular good content and use some basic SEO techniques and marketing through social networks and people will come. Now all you need to do is to monetise the site by placing Adsense on it (which pays out each time it gets clicked) and by selling products of your own and that you get commission on (just search for 'affiliate schemes'). This methods of working for yourself online is such a good move because you earn 'passive' income meaning that once it's set up you don't have to do anything. You literally earn money in your sleep. It's also a great spring board to promote pretty much any other dream job you might have.
Proof Reader – Here's another example of some of the work for yourself ideas I've had that I haven't gotten around to using. It's an easy one – just advertise online and through writing magazines that you will edit articles and manuscripts and send them back for a fee. It's a pleasant and easy job that you can do on any scale.
Builder – My friend went self employed as a builder and all he had to do to be successful in this career was to drive around the area and to look for houses that needed jobs doing. Then he'd just go up to the door and quote them a price. The same could work for a range of self employed ideas if you have any labour skills. The work will then further start coming in through local advertising and by word spreading among your friends.
Buying and Selling – Another really easy business model and one of the most popular ways of starting your own business is to buy things in bulk (wholesale) and to then sell them more cheaply on eBay or through your own website. To do this just find something boring and cheap to order in bulk and then repackage it on eBay. For instance buy all the Twilight books individually in bulk, then sell them for more as a set with a red ribbon around them. As you make more profit you can then invest more and more money into buying things in more bulk and better advertising. Then you can start employing people and using warehouses if you really are interesting in starting your own business on a larger scale. My one piece of advise is to think about packaging, marketing and delivery. This is what will make your products stand out among the crowd. For instance if you buy and sell jewellery then put it in a beautiful box and call the company something that evokes quality and romance and you then get some prestige associated with your business.
Day Trading – Day trading is a popular way to make money online that involves buying and selling shares and stocks within a 24-hour period. This works because share prices vary within minutes, so if you buy 100 shares at £13 each, you can wait two hours and sell them on at £15 each and make a £200 profit. It's simple and easy, but it's also essentially gambling, so be careful with this method.
Crafts – If you have a craft or hobby then this is an easy way to make money online. Simply make a whole bunch of items such as necklaces or rings and then sell them on eBay, through your website, and through markets. Again this comes down to packaging, marketing and delivery. I once bought myself a 'star chart' on eBay which was a poster you hung over the bed that would create a glowing night sky over you while you slept. I paid £10 and when I got it all it turned out to be was a piece of A3 paper with glow pen dotted all over it. I couldn't begrudge the guy it was genius... he would have had zero overheads and he marketed shit in such a way as to make it attractive.
And that's all it takes to make money online and for good work for yourself ideas. All you need to do is to think of a basic model – a way of getting things cheaply whether it's because you made them or because you know a cheaper source, and then supplying them to people. What will make you a success is how you market yourself, how you find clients and how good a service you provide. The only thing possibly holding you back is fear – honestly if you want to do this, you can.
