What is Your BMI?

By Hannah Bunce

Your BMI is a good way to work out if you have a healthy weight [or for bodybuilders a way to see if you could be more incredibly ripped - Ad]. Being overweight or underweight comes with dangers to your health, such as cancer, strain on your heart and diabetes, so it is always advisable to ensure that you are a good weight. BMI is also fairly straightforward to work out, meaning that it is one of the best ways to work out your weight, and it is possible to keep a constant eye on your health. BMI can be used on a variety of people, though it is unadvisable on children under 2, pregnant women, and may not be entirely accurate on athletes with large muscle bulk. In these cases your doctor will advise you about whether the BMI score falls within the healthy range. It is simple to work out your BMI, which uses a simple equation. This is simply done by first working out your height in metres and multiplying it by itself. Next you will need to measure your weight in kg. For example, if your height is 1.5 metres and your weight is 55kg, then your equation will look like this:

1.5 x 1.5 = 2.25. Your BMI will then be 55 divided by 2.25, which would give you a score of 24.4. Following this, it is possible to see how your score falls on the BMI range.

As people come in different shapes and sizes, it is difficult to say a specific weight that people should be, so instead your BMI score will fall within one of the BMI ranges. A score that falls below 18.5 means that you are underweight. This could be for several different reasons. It might be best if you started to consider building up your weight, such as increasing your fitness regime, or increasing your diet. [Unless of course you're going for that sh look...]

A score that falls between the range of 18.5-24.9 indicates that your weight falls within the healthy range, and you are unlikely to have any side effects from your weight. A score that comes to above 25.0 shows that your weight comes to above the ideal weight, and you may need to think about losing weight. This can be done in many ways, such as including more fruit and vegetables in your diet, or exercising several times a week. If you feel uncertain about how to improve your BMI, it is always possible to discuss your BMI with your doctor.
